LCW (LCVP)

General Information

Life, Community and Work (LCW) is a dynamic and practical two-year Leaving Cert subjectdesigned to prepare students for life beyond school. It supports students indeveloping self-awareness, confidence and essential transferable life skillswhile exploring future education, training and career pathways.

    • LCW places the student at thecentre of learning. Throughout the course, students explore who they are,identify their strengths, values and interests, and set meaningful personal andcareer goals.  
    • Student research progression opportunities such as apprenticeships,Further and Higher Education, entrepreneurship and employment, enabling them tomake informed decisions about their future.
    • A key feature of LCW is itsstrong focus on real-world experience. Students engage with their localcommunity, participate in collaborative problem-solving projects, and completea structured work experience or work shadowing placement.
    • They learn about workplaceexpectations, employment rights and responsibilities, and develop valuabletransferable skills such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking,creativity and resilience.
    • Learning is experiential andreflective in nature. Students build a digital portfolio over the two years,documenting their growth and achievements.
    • Students also complete 3 days of work experience as partof this subject area.
    • Students also complete 4 assessment tasks. All of this will aid the students final Portfolio in Action Project.

Assessment is made up of:

Portfolio in Action (60%) Written Examination (40%)LCW is offered at common level and is graded using a four-point scale (Distinction, Merit, Pass, Not Achieved). 50% is required to pass this subject. Exam is traditionally held before the May bank holiday so one less exam to worry about in June. This subject is ideal for students who enjoy practical learning, real-life application, and developing skills that will support them in further education, training, employment and active participation in their communities.
